Position Summary

The Facilities Tradesperson (FT) is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt, 12-month position reporting directly to the Director of Facilities and Operations (DFO).  The FT assists the DFO in maintaining the school’s physical plant to ensure proper operation.

This position will require rotating between shifts (6:00 am to 2:30 PM and 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm) for 2 weeks at a time. Additional on-call, evening, or weekend work may also be required. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance and repairs in a variety of areas assigned by the DFO in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, carpentry, painting, plastering/spackling, minor plumbing and electrical, mechanical and HVAC systems, furniture repair and assembly, floor and ceiling repair, masonry/concrete/tile work, and hanging shelving/decorations.
  • Assist the DFO in maintaining the school’s utility and emergency systems, including electricity, heat, plumbing, air conditioning, water tank, fire alarm, etc.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the continuous improvement of facility operations, work processes, and service levels
  • Execute building maintenance and repair requests assigned to the FT through tickets in the school’s online help desk and bring them to resolution in a timely fashion.
  • As directed by the DFO, be available to support the maintenance staff in executing set-ups and take-downs for various scheduled events, receiving deliveries, escorting maintenance vendors, etc.
  • Supervise and schedule contracted building staff
  • Place and keep track of orders for cleaning supplies
  • Respond to facility emergencies as needed on a 24-hour basis
  • Other duties as assigned by the DFO.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge and ability to perform routine maintenance tasks such as:
    • repairing toilets, sinks, radiators, A/C units, leaky pipes, etc.
    • painting, drywall, basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs
    • floor and ceiling repair
    • Furniture repair, such as classroom, office, cafeteria, etc.
    • Basic lock maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance - HVAC, plumbing, electrical
  • 2 years of progressive experience in building maintenance
  • Computer literacy with basic knowledge of email and website navigation
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively manage time

  • Demonstrates patience and kindness while working with individuals in and out of the school daily.
  • Can manage a flexible work schedule, with infrequent expectations to work early/late hours or on weekends to meet institutional needs.  They must also be available at unexpected times to respond to emergencies at the school, such as fire alarms, floods, or major mechanical difficulties. Weekend work may also be required in the summer to facilitate capital projects.
  • Has effective spoken and written English language skills, and must be comfortable speaking to others on the telephone and in person.
  • Has excellent integrity and demonstrates good moral character and initiative.

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to crawl, twist, bend, turn, and reach to complete a variety of job duties
  • Ability to work outside in hot or cold conditions for extended periods of time
  • Ability to operate machines
