About Regis
Regis High School is a Catholic, Jesuit college-preparatory school for 537 young men in grades 9–12 in New York City, and the only Jesuit, full-scholarship high school in the country. Founded in 1914 through the generosity of an anonymous woman and her family, Regis offers a tuition-free Jesuit education: every student attends on a full merit scholarship, made possible by the philanthropy of alumni, parents and friends.
Position Summary
The Varsity Baseball Head Coach leads the varsity baseball program, including team management, coaching, player development, and program administration, while working under the direction of the Director of Athletics. The coach builds a competitive, disciplined and close-knit team that reflects Regis's mission of forming leaders devoted to lifelong service as Men for Others. Regis baseball teams compete in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA). The program's highlight is its annual spring training trip to Florida, a tradition that players, parents and alumni value deeply. The Head Coach is responsible for fall ball, winter workouts, and the spring season, including a spring training trip to Florida (typically in March, for approximately 4-5 days).
Job Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Plan and lead the varsity calendar: fall ball (weekday practices/games and some weekend games), winter workouts (starting first Sunday in January), the spring season (practices and games) and the Florida spring training trip.
- Run varsity tryouts and select the varsity roster, coordinating with the Junior Varsity coaches on player placement.
- Plan and run all varsity practices and games, including game strategy, lineups and in-game decisions.
- Work with Director of Athletics to develop the baseball program with respect to team culture, expectations, and player development, and collaborate with the JV coaches to ensure alignment with the program.
Player Development and Culture
- Teach fundamentals, skills and baseball IQ.
- Build a culture of hard work, accountability, sportsmanship and respect for teammates, opponents and umpires.
- Support players' academic priorities, working with the Director of Athletics on missed class time and early dismissals.
- Serve as a mentor and role model for the players, on and off the field.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all CHSAA, Archdiocesan and Regis rules, including eligibility, conduct and safety policies.
- Supervise players at all practices, games, bus trips and overnight travel.
- Work with the school nurse on injuries, return-to-play decisions and concussion protocols.
Administration and Communication
- Communicate clearly and in a timely manner with players, parents, coaches, and the Director of Athletics.
- Work with the Director of Athletics on scheduling, transportation, field permits, equipment and uniform inventory, and the program budget.
- Report game results and support the athletics department's social media and alumni outreach.
Qualification
Required:
- Significant experience participating in and/or coaching competitive baseball.
- Strong knowledge of baseball fundamentals, strategy and player development.
- Availability for fall ball, winter workouts, spring season, and spring training trip.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Appreciation for Catholic, Jesuit education and a commitment to Regis's mission.
Preferred:
- College baseball playing experience.
- Head coaching experience and/or experience leading a coaching staff.
- Familiarity with the CHSAA.
- Knowledge of the college recruiting process.
Reporting structure
Reports directly to the Director of Athletics.
